The Search for a Wedding Photographer in Vancouver...

September 9, 2008

Deciding on a wedding photographer for your Vancouver wedding is one of the biggest and most lasting decisions you will make in preparation for your Vancouver wedding. Your wedding photos will last you a lifetime so it is a decision to be made with a lot of thought and accurate information. Wedding photography is a specialty area requiring a skilled and experienced wedding photographer as well as a good fit between the wedding photographer and the wedding clients. So take your time when trying to decide, meet with a variety of photographers. You will know when you meet the one you want to go with, you will just get that gut feeling that you have found the right fit.

When you do meet with the various wedding photographers there are many questions you will have ... here is a list that will help guide you :

  • how long have you been doing wedding photography? How many have been in the Vancouver area?
  • what packages do you have and what is included in them? ask wedding photographer bring a few samples of different proof albums for you to see
  • do you shoot digital or film? And what is the length of time until we can see our wedding photos? will the photographer post the images on line?
  • how much will it cost/hour if you need the photographer for a longer period after the agreed upon package coverage?
  • make sure you sign a contract and that it is stated that the photographer will be at your wedding on time and stay for specified hours
  • can you have a CD/DVD of images
  • what style of photography are you looking for: traditional, fashion, candid
  • what is the back up plan if your photographer gets injured or is not able to shoot your wedding? what about an alternate plan in the event it rains?

Other things to think about.....

Be careful not to be seduced by the wedding photographer that has low prices... remember you want quality not quantity...

Consider doing the portrait session prior to your wedding.... maybe you are set on not seeing each other before the ceremony, but just think about this... if you do it before, and this includes the wedding party shots as well, it will allow you to mingle with guests after ceremony rather than rushing off to do a portrait session. You will still have to do the family shots after the ceremony, but that should not take long.

Ask the photographer about doing an engagement session. The session not only enables your photographer to create beautiful images of a very special time in your relationship, it allows he/she to get to know you better as well. you will find you are more relaxed with your photographer on the wedding day, resulting in more natural, relaxed images. The session may even be included in your wedding package...and if not suggest adding it!

Searching through google for "Vancouver Wedding Photographers" will result in a long list of wedding photographers. It is a good idea to go through these sites and choose a few that have an appeal to you. Make yourself a list of these wedding photographers as the ones you would like to contact.

Be sure to allow enough time for photography..this is really important as you don't want to be rushed in any way on your wedding day and it will ensure that you will have more great images.

I just have to say once again how very important it is that you have a good fit and feeling about your wedding photographer - both a professional confidence in their ability to shoot your Vancouver wedding as well as a personal feeling of comfort.... your wedding photographer will share one of the most personal and important days of your life with you.. so it is a decision to be made with as much information as possible to ensure a magical day for you, and provide you with wedding photographs to treasure forever.

Good luck with your search, and thank you for considering Shine Photography.
